This was a fun challenge to figure out how to do a city builder type UI in VR. The primary navigation allows the player to zoom, pan, rotate with their motion controlled hands to quickly be anywhere in the world. To prevent motion sickness, we implemented a fixed grid on the periphery as the player traversed the world.
We started with a in world buildbar but quickly found out during testing that the having it fixed to the world wasn’t the best for the player that could be anywhere on the map. We implemented “player space” floating icons that would stay at a fixed distance to the player’s head and gives them access to any of the menus as needed.
We used direct interaction with structures for upgrading and direct interaction with settlers to assign to jobs. By rotating your wrist over while holding a settler or a dino would show stats.
